I got my first freelancer job!
I was hired to make and print a poster for an upcoming Andrew Bird show!
Here's the design I came up with:

I can't wait to print this guy!
I'm so happy that my dream is slowly, but surely, coming true. I know I need to work even harder than I have, but this is a pretty big breakthrough for me.
I just want to say that no matter what anyone says, you can do anything if you work hard.
A lot of people have doubted me over the years and doubted that I'll be able to make it as a freelance illustrator/artist gal.
I even got a score of 1 (which is the lowest) on my AP studio art portfolio in high school.
I was told I shouldn't pursue a career in the art field.
But look at where I am now! (Fools! Mwuahahaha!)
It might sound cheesy but I'm going to go where I feel like God wants me to go. Even when people think I'm a mad cow. And if I feel like He wants me to be a screenprinter then that's where I'm going to go. People might think I'll fail, but I know God won't let me down if I just trust Him...and put in the work.
I want to thank the people who did believe and support me. It's hard doing something you believe in when the world feels against you. But even having one person supporting you can make the difference.
I will honestly say though, that I'm still scared of failing. And scared of success. But I'm trying hard to not let that stop me from living the dream (and someday adopting all the animals!)
Aside from posters,
I've also been working on a book cover design for a class. Here's some highlights, and I chose my friend Erin to be the author and did an illustration of her.
What started as my original book cover just wasn't working out. It was a disaster and I just wasn't feeling the creative mojo even after reworking the whole thing. It was like the feeling you get when you're trying to force two puzzle pieces together that don't belong together.
And when I get that feeling with my work that tells me I either need to scrap the whole thing (and come back later), or try something that I normally wouldn't do.
I chose to scrap the idea (LOL).
I ended up going to the zoo over the weekend and got inspired by the tiger to come up with the House Cat idea.
I normally don't do "realistic" style of illustrations. Nor do I use this many colours in one image. But it was necessary for the cover to be successful.
Surprisingly it was pretty fun. And fun to colour too.

Sorry for the lack of updates. I don't like to write posts without good content. But I'm going to try a new instalment called "Sketchbook Saturdays!" In these instalments you'll get to see glimpse into the brain world of Shirley and see some of my sketches that I've done over the week.
I've also reopened my Etsy shop! I figured having my work on Etsy will help boost sales and give me a better chance at being seen online (and it has compared to Storenvy).
Here's the link to the store: Shirley's Etsy shop
Pretty soon I'm going to be changing the name of all the shops and this blog so everything is more consistent.
I've also updated the "about me" page so shop links are there as well!
There won't be a print for the 1:14 challenge this week unfortunately. I feel bad but at the same time I made some awesome progress this week with what's been going on. I hope to make up for it in the next coming two week block!
